Nonprofit celebrates 50th anniversary with ground breaking for new building
OKLAHOMA CITY – June 27, 2010 - As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled (“OKFD”), a not-for-profit human services organization, will hold a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of its new 4,000 square foot multi-purpose recreational facility on Wednesday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at its headquarters, located at 8421 N. Walker Ave.
Special remarks will be delivered by State Senator Constance Johnson, State Representative Anastasia Pittman and City Councilman Sam Bowman. The new facility is made possible in large part by the generosity of Impact Oklahoma (www.impactoklahoma.org), whose members contributed $100,000 to the project. A representative from Impact Oklahoma will also speak.
Other speakers include: Connie Weber, OKFD board president; Ret. Judge Charles L. Owens, OKFD board member and caregiver; Georgia Devening, OKFD executive director; and a representative each from United Way of Central Oklahoma and DHS-Aging Agency Services. Entertainment will be provided by “The Tappers,” a client dance group.
Established in Oklahoma City in 1960, OKFD is the only organization of its kind in the region that provides adult health services weekdays to persons with severe developmental disabilities, who are not employable. Client services include: roundtrip specialized transportation to and from the organization’s headquarters; exercise, recreation, and socialization activities; arts and crafts and games; performing arts and scouting; and field trips to malls, museums, parks and other points of interest. The program also includes specialized nutrition, and staff members are specially trained to care for clients who require tube feeding,
ostomy/catheter care and toileting.
With 90 clients enrolled at the present time, and still operating from a building constructed in 1966, the organization needs more space. When the new facility is completed later this fall, OKFD will be able to accommodate 120 clients. OKFD also operates a Thursday night dinner dance program that averages 140 developmentally disabled participants.
Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled is a United Way participating agency.

The National Coalition for the Homeless recently issued a report indicating 21 cities in the U.S. have enacted legislation that restricts feeding the homeless. This marks a 47% increase in such laws.
Over 600,000 people suffer from homelessness in the United States. Of those 600,000-plus, 65% are living in emergency shelters. In 2012, a study from the Queen's Nursing Institute discovered the diets of homeless people to be "high in saturated fat and added sugars and low in fiber, vitamins and minerals." This is despite the fact that 70% of the homeless people they spoke to wanted to improve their diet.
Thus, stopping food sharing programs is cutting off a vital lifeline for homeless people and condemning them to the systemic malnutrition that plagues the poor. And it's thanks to a few restrictions that, in practice, seem patently absurd.
How can city governments make charitable acts illegal? These restrictions don't necessarily make "charity" — like local groups such as churches giving out food to homeless people — illegal. Instead, governments are finding ways to make it difficult for food sharing programs to operate legally.
One method is to require food sharing programs to purchase a permit to distribute food. Another is to force homelessness-oriented charities to comply with food safety regulations. In fact, the report claims this can outright stop food from being shared on safety grounds.
Charitable food services means providing food without charge, payment or other compensation to benefit those in need at an outdoor location not owned, leased or controlled by the individual or organization providing the food.
Food service event means each instance in which charitable food services are provided to more than five individuals. Recognized charitable food service provider means an individual or organization which participates in charitable food services and has received a certificate from the city designating said individual or organization as being in good standing in the City of Houston Recognized Charitable Food Service Provider Program.
It shall be unlawful for any organization or individual to sponsor or conduct a food service event on public or private property without the advance written consent of the public or private property owner or other individual with lawful control of the property.
Houston's food sharing law also states these programs must "coordinated jointly by the director of the health and human services department and one or more community-based organizations."
The distinction is somewhat absurd. You can give five sandwiches to five homeless people, but if you give six sandwiches to six homeless people, you're breaking the law.
But perhaps the most effective method city governments use is mobilizing the population against the food sharing programs.
"In most cases, business and homeowners who do not want people experiencing homelessness to be attracted to their communities, place tremendous pressure, and sometimes even harass, the organization responsible for the food-sharing program to cease or relocate their programs," the report said.
The biggest cities attempting to restrict food sharing include Philadelphia, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Baltimore, Seattle, Houston and Dallas.

What is a street paper?
A street paper is a publication that provides homeless and low-income individuals with a voice and a legitimate source of income. Street papers are sold entirely by homeless and low-income individuals, who are able to use this employment as a stepping-stone out of homelessness.
Street papers also seek to give a voice to the homeless by publishing articles written by the homeless and about homelessness. There are 126 street papers around the world and 39 in the United States.
The Curbside Chronicle is the first and only street paper in Oklahoma.
How does it work?
Before beginning work, vendors go through an application, interview, and training process. Vendors also sign a strict code of conduct concerning vending procedures and rules.
All vendors are considered self-employed and act as small business owners. Vendors get 15 free magazines to begin with and sell each magazine for the suggested donation of $2. After their first 15 free, vendors purchase magazines for $0.75 an issue and continue to sell them for the suggested donation of $2. Vendors keep 100% of their profits from sales and act as small business owners when they purchase more magazines to restock their inventory. This $0.75 vendor fee creates ownerships, responsibility, and empowerment in the vendor position.

LAWTON, Okla._Strange moments for a local restaurant Friday night when one patron couldn't pay for her dinner or drinks.
Police say Kristi Rhines ordered several alcoholic drinks and food at El Chico in Lawton but later said she had no way to pay for them. She told managers her husband was on his way to pick up the tab.
When asked about her husband, she told them she was legally married to Jesus Christ, but had no marriage license. She also told management that Jesus would be able to walk in and produce U.S. currency to pay for her bill.
Police confirmed that Rhines had no way of paying for her tab. She was booked into the Lawton City Jail on a complaint of fraud.

Something big is happening at Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City, and it may not be what you think. When new owners, Raptor Properties bought the mall in late 2011, the most likely scenario was complete demolition. The partnership has unveiled its new plans to convert Crossroads Mall into the nation's newest Hispanic cultural and commercial center. That date also marked the official start of weekly cultural programming, featuring the state's largest mariachi, Mariachi Orgullo de America.
On March 27th, Raptor announced the acquisition of the building that previously held Dillard's to house a key element of this new model, the Mercardo. The Mercardo will be a 200+ vendor marketplace designed to serve as a business incubator, offering accessible retail space to a wide variety of products and services.
Other elements that will make the center a new home for Hispanic families will include many commodities focused on the comfort and entertainment of the oldest to the youngest members of these families. Such commodities include increased restroom capacity, increased soft seating including lounges, more restaurants, more play areas and kid's activities, community services, a health services, financial services, and other non-traditional offerings that would seem out of place in mainstream malls.
Plans unveiled yesterday included architectural rendering of new entrances, a performing arts center, the retail business incubator, and other proposed uses. The hope is that Plaza Mayor will join the list of successful implementations throughout the country, and it is well on its way with 15 new contracts signed since the end of March, and increasing interest from additional national tenants.

A patient showing Ebola -like symptoms was put under evaluation at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut late on Wednesday. According to reports, the patient is a student researcher who had recently traveled to Liberia. The hospital confirmed the news on Thursday morning in a statement : "We have not confirmed or ruled out any diagnosis at this point." Ebola scares have become common in the United States in recent weeks, but many have turned out to be false alarms. The three cases in Dallas have been the only confirmed Ebola diagnoses in the country. But Tuesday morning the plane was flown back to Cleveland and then to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., back to Cleveland and then to Atlanta and finally back to Cleveland again, according to Daniel Baker, chief executive of the flight-monitoring site Flightaware.com. He said his data did not include any passenger manifests, so he could not tell how many total passengers flew on the plane Tuesday. Various reports now making their way through social networks and alternative media sources claim that Nina Pham’s boyfriend may have been admitted to a Dallas-area hospital. It is not clear whether the individual was showing symptoms of the virus or if he has been quarantined as a precautionary measure. The Centers for Disease Control is advising funeral homes in the United States on how to handle the remains of Ebola victims, although officials are keen to stress that the development is not a cause for alarm. An executive order signed by President Obama at the end of July also allows for the “apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of suspected communicable diseases.”
