8/15/2015 -- Japan on Alert -- Sakurajima Volcano evacuations -- Volcano steaming excessively


August 15, 2015 This video shows approximately six full hours of new steaming occurring from the "Back (North) " side of Sakurajima Volcano in South Japan. Normally, the "front (South)" side of the caldera erupts, giving off large plumes of ash, and impressive lava flows. To see such large steaming coming from Mt. Ontake (back side of Sakurajima) means a large amount of magma is upwelling from below the caldera of the whole complex, not just one caldera. Today (August 15) Japanese officials are reporting "major tectonic deformations" occurring around Sakurajima, prompting warnings to be issued for possible evacuations. Thousands of small earthquakes , as well as surface deformation has caused officials to move the volcano to an unprecedented "Level 4", up from the long standing "Level 3" which covered even the largest eruptions at this active volcanic complex.
