Activists Sue Over Cash Bail System In Courts

Lawyers have filed a class action lawsuit alleging that California’s bail system unconstitutionally treats poor and wealthy suspects differently. The Washington DC group intervened on behalf of 39 year old Crystal Patterson, who didn’t have the $150,000 bail to get out of jail after an arrest in October. Patterson was forced to pay a bail bonds company $15,000 plus interest in order to go home and care for her invalid grandmother. The day after her release, the district attorney decided not to pursue charges, but Patterson still owes the bail bonds company. The non-profit Washington DC legal clinic is arguing that clients often plead guilty to crimes they didn’t commit simply to avoid jail time and debts incurred from bail bonds companies, making the practice of cash bail unconstitutionally unfair. http://bit.ly/1OmwwlH http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
