Illinois Increasingly Sues Inmates to Recoup Incarceration Costs


A growing number of former prison inmates in Illinois are being sued by the state to force them to pay a lump sum towards the cost of their incarceration. The state is sometimes seeking many tens of thousands of dollars. The practice is the latest twist on the “pay-to-stay” trend across the US. Part of the public burden of funding prisons is pushed back onto offenders. Usually the Illinois department of corrections sanctions lawsuits against criminals sentenced for the most serious crimes in order to recoup costs.
