On March 1st, NASA issued a statement claiming that the large CO (carbon monoxide) levels over California were a data error caused by their GEOS-5 satellite coming back online after being asleep/in safe mode for several days. An oddly-timed carbon monoxide scare took place at the WIPP nuclear waste underground storage facility in New Mexico on Feb. 24th. Air quality alerts were simultaneously put into effect in Los Angeles beginning on Feb. 26.
