With fears over Zika virus increasing, some communities in the state of New York are looking to encourage the growth of the bat population. North American bat species maintain their high energy expenditure by eating insects, including the mosquitoes that could transmit diseases like Zika and West Nile virus. And it is estimated that a single bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes per hour, which is more environmentally friendly than spraying pesticides. On Long Island, the local government has even started deploying bat houses, small wooden boxes that are suspended in trees. The houses are said to provide a cozy home for the animals, ensuring they call the community home, and do most of their insect hunting nearby. http://bit.ly/29zm7XP http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
