Texas’ Open Carry Gun Laws Made Dallas Shooting Worse

A Black Lives Matter protest on Thursday night ended in more violence. Gunmen opened fire sniper-style, killing 5 officers and wounding 7 others, including at least two civilians. After the shooting, the Dallas Police Department released a photo of a man who they identified as a suspect. Police said the man was carrying an AR-15 rifle and wearing camouflage gear. However, openly carrying a gun or rifle is legal in Texas. There is no specific permit required to carry these guns in public, and weapons such as the AR-15 are not unusual at protests.
