Turkey is holding trial for almost 30 police officers, who are accused of involvement in the mid-July failed coup. The trial for the 29 officers in Istanbul is the first in the Turkish metropolis. They are accused of seeking to unseat the government and intentional negligence in protecting the home of President Rejep Tayyip Erdogan on the night of the military revolt. If convicted, the officers could face up to 15 years in jail and even life sentence. Over the past five months, thousands of people have either been sacked or arrested following the abortive putsch. Ankara accuses US-based opposition figure Fethullah Gulen of orchestrating the coup. Gulen strongly rejects the allegations.
