Iran: Liberation of Aleppo 'an important turning point' in fight against terror - Dehghan

In an exclusive interview with RT Arabic released on Tuesday, Iran's Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan commented on the situation in Syria and the liberation of Aleppo. SOT, Hossein Dehghan, Defence Minister of Iran (Farsi): "Aleppo is a strategic area which has influence on political and economy situations in Syria as a whole. Considering this assessment, we should agree that the Syrian government and all who took its side understood the importance of Aleppo. That is the reason why the priority area in all the plans on liberation of the Syrian territory was exactly the city of Aleppo. The final stage of the military operation deprived the militants from the ability to resist. On the other hand, the sponsors of terrorists understood that if the situation, which formed around Aleppo, maintains, it will lead to destruction of all the terrorists from the view point of organizational structure and personnel, and it will also break the spirit and unity of the ranks. That is why they decided to surrender and agreed to evacuate the city. Sure, it became an important turning point in fight of the Syrian government and the Syrian army against the terrorist organisations. We will stand with the Syrian army as long as all the terrorists admit defeat. Speaking about another groups, they should take part in inclusive Syrian dialogue, which should define the destiny of Syria." SOT, Hossein Dehghan, Defence Minister of Iran (Farsi): "It depends on the ceasefire: if we manage to reach it and stabilise it, then the political process will start. The decision that for the negotiations the meeting between the opposition and the Syrian Government should take place in Astana has already been made. I hope that the sides will come to the desired conclusion. If this political process starts and goes on, it will be necessary to fight against Jabhat an-Nusra and ISIS simultaneously. Now Jabhat an-Nusra takes control over many areas of the country and does not tend to the dialogue. So it is necessary to fight it. But where exactly? It depends on the situation in each specific area and on the opportunities available."
