Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif welcomed his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem in Tehran, Saturday, to discuss the latest developments in Syria, in particular in the nationwide ceasefire which Iran played a part in brokering. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Syrian government and armed opposition groups had reached an agreement on a nationwide ceasefire in Syria which began on midnight on Friday in a deal brokered by Russia and Turkey. The agreement includes a fresh round of peace talks that will take place in Astana in Kazakhstan, January. The terms of the agreement have not been extended to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra) and groups affiliated to the militant entities.
