Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow would begin to reduce its military presence in Syria, speaking during a debriefing on the Syrian peace process with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow, Thursday. SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "We will take measures today to distribute the signed package of agreements that you have mentioned as the official document at the UN Security Council, inform the UNSC members about the work and answer their questions. The process that was started by Russia, Turkey and Iran was already supported by the current UN Secretary-General and the Secretary-General-elect [Antonio Guterres] that will enter his post on January 1." SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "In the future, at some other stages, perhaps, we need to attract some other key players, who have an impact on developments in Syria. These are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and Jordan. And of course, we will invite the UN representatives. It will allow continuity of the political process under the principles endorsed by the UN Security Council resolution 2254. I would also like to express my hope that after the administration of [US President-elect] Donald Trump assumes its duties, it will join the efforts [on the Syrian conflict settlement] in order to channel this work into one direction based on friendly and collective cooperation." SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "This is the significant result of our joint work, the efforts of the Defence Ministry and Foreign Ministry, our partners in the region. Now we must all do everything to ensure that these agreements are entered into force, to make them work, so that the negotiating team that has been already formed and those that are still forming, will come to Astana in a timely manner and start a real peace process there." SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "And in this regard, I call for the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, the armed opposition groups, all countries in the region involved in the conflict and those that have influence on the parties of the conflict, to support the agreement, to take an active part in the proposed talks in the Kazakh capital." SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "I will ask you to organise my contacts with our partners in Turkey, Iran and Damascus. We must discuss our joint further steps to consolidate the reached agreements. And I agree with the proposal of the Defence Ministry to reduce our military presence in the Syrian Republic, bearing in mind that we will unconditionally continue to fight against international terrorism and will continue to support the legitimate Syrian government in the fight against terrorism."
