This animation of the SEVIRI Airmass RGB imagery shows the full development of a rapidly intensifying hurricane force low over the past few days. This intense system reached peak intensity at 0600 UTC today with a central pressure of 932 hPa, and the overnight Ascat wind retrievals indicated up to 90 kt in the strong cold air advection in the south quadrant of the low center. As a reminder, an extratropical/post-tropical low pressure system is classified as "hurricane force" when the winds are greater than or equal to 64 knots. In addition, a system is considered to be "rapidly intensifying" when the central pressure of the low decreases by at least 24 hectopascals (hPa) or millibars (mb) over a consecutive 24 hour period. This video contains no speech or other audio information necessary for the comprehension of the content. It is best viewed in HD. The resolution can be changed by clicking on the gear wheel in the bottom of the video screen. The imagery in this video is courtesy of the GOES-R Proving Ground.
