The 58-year-old from Salt Lake City, Utah, has made a couple of attempts at injuring herself so that her dream might become a reality. Even though she is physically healthy, Jennings-White lives the life of a paraplegic, always moving around in her wheelchair. She stated that having any sort of sensation in her legs had always seemed wrong to her and that she fantasized about being paralyzed from the waist down. Her desire began when she was a child. Her aunt Olivia had got in a bicycling accident and was forced to wear leg braces for a period of time. At the age of four, after seeing her aunt, Jennings-White began feeling that there was something wrong with her for not having braces too. When she was nine years old, she pedaled her bicycle off an acting stage which was 4 feet high, in an attempt to injure her legs. After landing on her neck, she realized that she could have seriously hurt herself and decided to act out her fantasy in secret. She would climb trees and play risky sports as she believed it increased the chance of crippling her legs. As she grew older, Jennings-White took up downhill skiing. She would always ski at great speed and on the most dangerous runs in the hope of getting into an accident that would finally render her paralyzed. The woman even admitted that when driving her car, she fantasized about getting into a crash that would claim the use of her legs. In 2010, Jennings-White found a medic who was willing to cut off her sciatic and femoral nerves. However, she could not afford the 16.000 pound operation cost. She continues to live as a paraplegic longing for the day when she will be paralyzed and thus finally complete. 2: Jason “I'd say the decision to remove my hand had been made my whole life. I kept coming up with excuses why not to do it but, I kind of knew it was something that I always had to do.” A man from Central America, who identified himself only as ‘Jason’ described for a media outlet the process of removing his hand using a power tool. Jason explained that he had always felt the limb did not belong to him and that it was not meant to be a part of his body. He remembered bending his hand back and pretending it was a stump as he did different daily tasks. Jason did not mention the particular tool used in the process. He only stated that it was something fast and that he could use with his eyes shut. Jason’s friends and family are unaware that he suffers from a BIID and believe the amputation was the result of a workplace injury. Immediately after removing his right hand Jason described going through every emotion possible, all except regret. By Jason’s own account, his life is finally complete now that his right 1: Jewel Shuping After longing to be blind her entire life, Jewel Shuping finally had her wish fulfilled by a psychologist who agreed to pour drain cleaner in her eyes. Shuping’s desire reportedly started early in her childhood. She told a news outlet that when she was six years old the idea of being blind made her feel very comfortable. Shuping also related that, as a child, she would stare into the sun for extended periods of time after her mother warned her that it would cause damage to her eyes. When Shuping was in her teens she started wearing black tinted sunglasses, and when she was eighteen years old she got her first white cane. By the age of 20 she had already become fluent in Braille. Shuping described the process as ‘blind-simming’ which means pretending to be blind. Medical professionals diagnosed her with BIID. In 2006, she met a psychologist willing to fulfill her life-long fantasy. After administering special numbing eyedrops the psychologist poured several drops of drain cleaner in each of Shuping’s eyes. She described the process ‘My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin. But all I could think was 'I am going blind it is going to be okay'. It is unknown whether the psychologist, whose identity was not disclosed, would face prosecution for blinding Shuping. After the procedure was completed, she expressed great disappointment after opening her eyes and realizing that she could still see. It would take six months for her to go completely blind. Her left eye collapsed on itself after suffering a corneal meltdown, and was eventually removed and her right eye had cataracts, glaucoma and multiple scars. Shuping said that she truly believed she was meant to be blind from birth. When it did finally happen, she described feeling happy and complete. She expressed having no regrets and hoped that sharing her story would raise awareness for people suffering from BIID.
