A lion and a bear, the only remaining inhabitants of the destroyed Nour Park in Mosul, were seen living in unsettling conditions, Sunday, after the animal park was deserted following intense fighting between government troops and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). The rest of the Nour Park inhabitants either died of starvation or were killed. Some animals escaped once cages were broken open. Neighbours reportedly fed the animals until the fighting became too intense to leave the safety of their homes. The zoo is located in the eastern part of the city, which has recently been retaken by government forces.
