Asian stocks fall on Monday over escalating U.S.-China trade war

Stock markets in Asia were trading lower on Monday due mainly to the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China. South Korea's benchmark KOSPI closed at around 1,916 on Monday, down 1-point-6 percent,...while the tech-heavy KOSDAQ plunged more than 4 percent to around 5-hundred-82. Japan's Nikkei also slipped more than 2 percent. At around 10:30 A.M., Hong Kong's Hang Seng index plunged more than 3 percent,... following another violent protest over the weekend,... while the Chinese Shanghai Composite dipped 1-point-6 percent. Last Friday,... U.S. President Donald Trump declared a tariff hike on Chinese goods in response to Beijing's decision to impose duties on 75 billion U.S. dollars worth of American imports. Trump said, from October, Washington will hike tariffs on 250 billion dollars worth of Chinese imports to 30 percent from 25 percent. He said tariffs on another 300 billion dollars in goods from China will also increase to 15 percent from 10 percent in September and December. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told Fox News on Sunday that the President is "as determined as ever on this issue." He added that Trump will do whatever he needs to achieve free, fair and reciprocal trade with China, including sanctions and a willingness to deal with any retaliation from Beijing accordingly. In the meantime, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He,... who is leading the negotiation team, said on Monday that China opposes the escalation of the trade war as it does not help both countries and the rest of the world. He added that Beijing is willing to solve the problem through cooperation with a composed attitude.
