WHO Warns of 236,000 More Covid Deaths in Europe by Dec. 1
The head of the World Health Organization's European branch warned Monday of a rapid increase in COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations, calling the stagnation in vaccine uptake a "serious concern." Hans Kluge cited "deeply worrying" transmission rates, saying 33 countries among the 53 in the WHO Europe region have reported an increase in case counts of 10% or more over the last two weeks. COVID-related deaths rose 11% over the last week in the region, and he cited one "reliable projection" of 236,000 more deaths in Europe by December 1. Overall, the region has seen a total of 1.3 million deaths due to the pandemic. Speaking to reporters from Copenhagen, Kluge cited the summertime surge in travel, the easing of restrictions, and the highly transmissible Delta variant as causes for the increase in numbers. He said "schools must be open" as the academic year resumes, and called for a vaccination strategy that targets teachers and school staff, as well as children aged over 12.
