No let-up in Manama’s crackdown on political dissent; Bahraini forces have once again stormed peaceful anti-regime protests in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom. Regime forces attacked protesters on Sitra Island and fired tear gas to disperse them. They also arrested a number of the demonstrators. The Al Khalifa troops attacked protesters in the village of Diraz as well. The protesters staged rallies to show solidarity with Bahraini Shia cleric Sheikh Issa Qasem who was stripped of his citizenship last June for supporting reforms in the country. They also marked the first anniversary of Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Bahrain has been the scene of anti-regime protests since 2011. Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries during the demonstrations.
