Hospitalization for Psychosis Linked to Increased Risk of Stroke #okc #news #wth

A link has been found between hospitalization for a psychiatric disorder and increased risk of stroke, according to new research released Thursday. Following hospitalization for disorders such as depression, anxiety or PTSD, patients were three times more likely to have a stroke within the next month, and twice as likely over the course of the next year. Although it is known that people who have a stroke are more likely to develop a psychiatric illness, research into the inverse effect has been limited. This most recent study does not prove a direct cause and effect of mental illness to increased risk of stroke, but does prove that hospitalization for said illness is in fact associated with a higher risk of stroke. At this early stage of research, scientists only have theories of why this might be the case. Regardless, the findings are helpful to inform doctors on how to best treat their patients with mental illness, so that hospital stays and trips to the ER are less likely to occur. http://bit.ly/2kTVsi0 http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
