A group in Norman wants to build a new neighborhood for those transitioning out of homelessness, but the proposal isn't without controversy. Food and Shelter, currently off Comanche St. near the courthouse, serves 200 or more a day with meals. But the facility is small and needs updating. Add on that Norman's previous transitional shelter, East Main Place, closed in 2014. That's where April Heiple, executive director, had a vision of something bigger, while building smaller. This is what she came up with: a neighborhood of 32 tiny homes just south of the former location off Main and Reed. "I love that Norman gets to do something visionary in homeless services," Heiple said. One bedroom homes top out at 279 square feet. Two bedroom homes are 468 square feet. "There's just something different about having your own front porch, your own house, your own four walls, and so I wanted to give people homes." The new facility would also have a large kitchen like the current location, that serves more than 200 people a day. Sue Sanders lives across the street from the site. She moved here 20 years ago, just finishing paying off her house. She's one of dozens who've filed formal protests against building the site here. "I was pretty horrified," Sanders said. "I'm just concerned there will be all these people waiting for meals, having no place to live, because they'll be drawn here to have their breakfast lunch and dinner, 24/7." Down the street, Rebekah Fisher says the proposal gives her anxiety thinking about transients using the neighborhood. She fears that the increased traffic will lead to crime and other problems. Sanders says even with her mortgage now paid, it's a decision she wouldn't make again. "I wish I'd never bought my house before. I own it, but now I regret buying it," Sanders said. Heiple says she hopes a continued dialogue between the group and the neighborhood will help ease fears. She showed us dozens of letters supporting the project. She says it cost the city $40,000 per homeless person in the city from police interactions and other services. The plan still requires a final approval by the city council.
